God’s Authority Over Time: When He Steps In and Changes Everything

While reading about King Hezekiah, I was struck by something I had never seen so clearly before: God didn’t just heal him, He redeemed time. He actually added 15 years to his life and reversed the shadow on the steps as a sign. That stirred something in me.

I started wondering: Are there other times in the Bible when God changed time or added to it? The answer surprised me. Yes, many times, in many ways.

From the sun standing still, to time being delayed, to judgment being postponed, the Bible shows us again and again:

God is not bound by time; He commands it.
He is the Creator of time, and when it serves His purpose, He interrupts, extends, or redeems it for His glory.

Here are some powerful biblical moments where we see this truth in action:

1. Hezekiah: 15 Years Added to His Life (and a Sign on the Sun Dial)

“I will add fifteen years to your life.”Isaiah 38:5

“Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.”Isaiah 38:8

Hezekiah was terminally ill, but when he cried out to God in prayer and repentance, God responded with compassion and added 15 years to his life.

As a sign that this promise was true, God caused the sun’s shadow to move backward ten steps on the dial (or stairway) of Ahaz, a type of ancient sun dial. This was a visible, supernatural reversal of time to prove that God’s word would come to pass.
God not only hears our prayers, He can interrupt time itself to confirm His promises and extend our purpose.

2. Joshua: The Sun Stood Still

“The sun stood still… and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.” — Joshua 10:13

Joshua was in battle when he asked God to pause the sun and moon so Israel could finish defeating their enemies. And God did it.

Time literally stopped. God paused the day to give His people victory.

3. A Reversed Shadow: A Sign to Hezekiah

“The sun turned back ten steps on the stairway…” — Isaiah 38:8

This was the sign God gave Hezekiah to confirm his healing: a reversal of the sun’s shadow. That means time visually moved backward.

God didn’t just delay death. He put time in reverse as a prophetic act.

4. Daniel’s Prophecy: Heaven’s Calendar

“Seventy weeks are decreed for your people…” — Daniel 9:24

Daniel was given a vision of God’s exact timeline, including the arrival of the Messiah and the end of the age.

This reminds us that God’s calendar is precise, even when we don’t see the full picture.

5. Lazarus: Delayed on Purpose

“So when He heard that Lazarus was ill, He stayed two days longer…” — John 11:6

Jesus didn’t rush to heal Lazarus. He allowed time to pass, even though it meant Lazarus would die, because He planned to raise him from the dead and show God’s greater glory.
Sometimes the delay is divine, and what looks like a setback is really a setup for resurrection.

6. Nineveh: Judgment Delayed by Repentance

“When God saw what they did… God relented of the disaster.” — Jonah 3:10

God told Nineveh judgment was coming in 40 days. But they repented, and God delayed and redirected that judgment.

Repentance changed the timeline.

What Does This Mean for Us Today?

The same God who moved shadows, paused the sun, and added years to Hezekiah’s life is still redeeming time today.

  • If you’ve lost years…
  • If you feel delayed or defeated…
  • If it looks like you’ve missed your window…

Take heart. God can redeem your time.

“I will restore to you the years that the locusts have eaten…” — Joel 2:25

He is the Redeemer of time, the Healer of delay, and the God of divine acceleration.

Prayer

Lord, You are the Creator and Redeemer of time. You made the sun stand still. You added years to Hezekiah. You delayed judgment for Nineveh. Redeem what I’ve lost. Accelerate what has been held back. I surrender my timeline to You. Let my life align with Your perfect will and timing. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Final Word to Encourage You

“My times are in Your hand…” — Psalm 31:15
“For the vision is yet for an appointed time… it will surely come.” — Habakkuk 2:3

God hasn’t forgotten you.
He sees every hour, every delay, every cry.
Your time is not wasted, it’s being redeemed for His glory.
